Butterfly weed is so pretty, I almost hate to call it a weed.

It freely seeds itself throught the garden and when I find a plant growing where I don't want it, I simply dig it up and move it to the butterfly "area". It grows tall, over 2 feet and looks pretty in a flower garden.

Caterpillars LOVE it and will eat it to a stub, but it always comes back...God has created it to do exactly what it should.

I try to keep a lot of plants in the garden for the caterpillars to munc on. This little guy will become a gorgeous Florida Swallowtail Butterfly with a radiant blue coloring. Here he is munching on some butterfly weed which has a pretty orange flower...see tomorrows post.

It's that time of year again...when the pineapples begin producing. Last year I had 7, this year I only see 2 growing right now...but it's early, a couple more could pop up. After all, I have about 20 pineapple plants throughout the garden, you just never know what sweet surprises they hold.

I am playing catch up on my photos today. For the past 2 weeks, I have been "puppy" sitting...or MONSTER sitting. This precious 6 month old puppy is 8 lbs heavier than my 7 yr old Boxer, and has about 10 times the energy, pulling power and chewing ability!

It's been a crazy couple of weeks, I took the photos, but did not have time to post them...I was pretty much exhausted by this little cutie!

While I won't pretend to know much about photography in general, I DO know that food seems to photograph best in natural light. I usually take food outside just out of direct sunlight to get a good shot.

(here's an example from my Feb. 13th post)

However, it isn't usually sunny at dinnertime, and often I want photos of what I made.

Last night was a good example... I made a beef stir fry. This is an example of what a flash can do to an otherwise tasty looking dish...makes it look like dog food basically. Ewwwww.

The light was pretty low in the dining room, but I took a shot anyway and worked with the exposure a bit on Picnik.

We went to a car show down the road...as we stepped off the motorcycle, I took the 100 steps and ended up smack dab in the middle of the parking lot... here is what I saw around me....

Loved the color...it was 'almost' pink, more like lavender.

Hubby use to have a car almost just like this when we met...he sold it because he was becoming a "family man" (I LOVE him)...I think he should get another one...don't you? I would totally go grocery shopping a LOT more, hee hee.

I am doing a "slightly" Shabby Chic changeover to my home, and this buffet was on the list of things to paint. It is oak and I know lot's of people will cringe at the fact that I painted it, but I love color and light and I can't deal with too much "wood", lol. So, here is my "Bird Song Blue" buffet...I love it!

My friend and her daughter were admiring it and saying how much they liked it when her precious 8 yr old says to me... "Aunt Kathy, no offense, but it kinda looks old"... Yes! Mission accomplished. :)

I wanted to take a shot of the towels on my clothesline. We are in the middle of painting our shed red and I totally didn't pay attention to the ladder in the photo. Instead of moving it, I decided to play with the "clone" tool and remove it. What do you think?

Yup.... I had a birthday...it just keeps happening...every year, another year older, hee hee. :)

This year for my birthday, we went with out bestest friends to Maggianos for dinner (YUM!), and afterward we headed to Old Town in Kissimmee, FL so that my best girlfriend, Kim and I could be flung 400 feet into the air in a slingshot...doesn't that sound fun??? :) It was!

The next day we went for a long motorcycle ride, which included Blackpoint Wildlife reserve...this is what we saw... YIKES! He's big...see his tail, how it curls around? He was on the bank and then began to slink into the water and down the canal where we could not see him. It's never a good thing to be on the opposite bank of a canal that contains a 13 foot gator that you canNOT see... we left after this shot was taken. :)

It's not that I haven't been taking photos, and it's not that I haven't been on the computer, lol... I just haven't been posting...it's Spring!!! My FAVORITE time of year... I've been busy just doing and living and playing.. :)

So, my next 3 posts will be "catch up" posts (sorry Tracy!)...I'll be back to normal after this! :)

82 ~ I have a lot of "painting" projects and "re-do" projects going on... mostly in my head, but here is one I managed to get done. I love light and bright and I realized I had too much dark wood in my house, so I chose to "shabby chic" my oak buffet... here is "mid-project":

Sage

Used for cooking, Sage has a slight peppery flavor. It is commonly used in British, Italian and Middle Eastern cooking. Of course, here in America, we all know it is a key ingredient in Turkey stuffing and seasoning! :)

Interesting Note: The names Salvia and "Sage" are derived from the Latin salvere ("to save"), referring to the healing properties long attributed to the various Salvia species. Modern evidence shows possible uses as an anti-sweating agent, antibiotic, antifungal, astringent, antispasmodic, estrogenic, hypoglycemic, and tonic.
Investigations have taken place into using sage as a treatment for Alzheimer's disease patients.

Parsley

Parsley is widely used in Middle Eastern, European, and American cooking. Thyme

Thyme is a good source of iron and is widely used in cooking in French,Italian, Greek and many other types of foods. It is great to use in meats, soups, and omlets. It is a common ingredient of the bouquet garni, and of herbes de Provence.

Interesting Note: The essential oil of common thyme 20-54% thymol, an antiseptic, and the main active ingredient in Listerine mouthwash. Before modern antibiotics were invented, it was used to medicate bandages. It is also effective against toenail fungus, and is the active ingredient in all-natural, alcohol-free hand sanitizers.

A tea made by steeping Thyme in water can be used for cough and bronchitis. It cna be used treat respiratory infections in the form of a tincture, tisane, salve, syrup or by steam inhalation.

I use Thyme in my hubby's favorite dish... Chicken n' Dumplin's. I'm quite certain that this flavorful herb is what make this dish so amazingly delicious! :)

Mexican Tarragon

Also called: Mexican marigold, Spanish tarragon, or Texas tarragon. Commonly used as a substitute for tarragon. The leaves have a tarragon-like flavor, with hints of anise (or a licorice type flavor). In late summer or early fall, the plant bears large clusters of golden yellow florets.
Interesting note: In one study, methanolic extract from the flower inhibited growth of Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli, and Candida albicans cultures—an effect that was enhanced with exposure to ultraviolet light. The roots, stems, and leaves also had the same effect when irradiated with UV light.... not quite sure if that means we should eat it and then go lay in the sun, or what??? lol

I use this herb in a soup I created that my husband just LOVES.... I call it... Kathy's Kickin' Chicken Soup.

Rosemary

A popular herb in Mediterranean cooking, used both fresh and dried. The leaves have a very strong scent and a slightly bitter taste, complimenting many foods.

Intersting note: Rosemary is extremely high in iron, calcium, and Vitamin B6. Rosemary extract has been shown to improve the shelf life and heat stability of omega-3 rich oils, which are prone to going rancid.

Oregano

Oregano is a very popular cooking herb, often more flavorful when it's leaves are dried and crushed. It is a staple in Italian/American cuisine, but is also used in Turkish, Greek and Latin foods as well as many others.

Interesting note: It became popular in the US when World War II soldiers brought it back with them, calling it the “pizza herb”. Not only used for pizza, in Southern Italy, it has long been with roasted, fried or grilled vegetables, meat and fish. Oregano combines well with spicy foods, which are popular in southern Italy. It is less commonly used in the north of the country, where marjoram tends to replace it.

This Bouganivilla (Bow-gan-vee-ya) has such a beautiful shocking bright pink color and it has grown into a small tree along my back fence. Just recently all the Bouganvillas in this are have bloomed out heavily, it's quite a show.

I thought I would be able to post daily while we were out of town, but the internet at our campground was way too slow...so I have to play catch up.

We took a few days away to go to Busch Gardens in Tampa, Fl....

(Our first day there we were to spend all day at Busch, however the rain started the night before and never stopped all day, so we snuggled in the camper, played games and watched a movie)

(After entering Busch Gardens, you are greeted by the well fed gators...they are so fat and lazy...but I still wouldn't want to test their friendliness)

This roller coaster is the biggest rush of fun ever! It's smooth, doesn't mess with your head and gives you such a thrill when it drops you FACE down from 200 feet...yup, it's a straight down 90 degree drop...wow!!!

I found this coffee table on Craigslist. I've been looking for a round table for a long time, with a little design element. It was stained dark cherry and I wanted to do a "white aged table"...here is my finished project.

I liked the natural light and soft shadows that were created at this time of day...

My front porch. It's chilly enough for the reds to be bright...by mid summer, they will be pale from the heat. It's warm enough for me to prepare my veggie garden (see the flat full of cabbage plants). January isn't so bad in Florida. :)

This is my next door neighbor's Egyptian Walking Iris....I wish it would "walk" on over to my garden. She gave me 2 divisions, but mine have not done quite as well as hers...so pretty.

Sunspot

My boxer has adopted this spot on the floor where the sun comes through the window...I think she believes she is a cat. :)

I loved the softness of this photo, and even liked (to an extent the shadows)...but they were too deep and you can't see her adorable face. A flash washed it out completely and took away "what I saw". Any suggestions on how to correct this?

I took this photo from my front yard at sunset. No, there wasn't a fire, but this was the true color in the sky. I had to adjust the exposure a little bit, as the trees were blending into the night sky. I use Picnik to make photo adjustments.

Happy New Year!

The "2" is actually the "Y" in a Joy decoration I have.
The "0" is ...well, a sand dollar.
A roman numeral clock in my hall bath and a Tinkerbell sticker make up the 1's.
I used the "Lomoish" effect in Picnik, and on 2 of the photos, I added a sepia tone.
